A Russian military aircraft is suspected of violating Finnish airspace over the Gulf of Finland on Wednesday afternoon, the Ministry of Defence said.
The suspected airspace violation occurred near Kirkkonummi’s Porkkala peninsula when a Russian plane avoided thunderstorms, the ministry said. The Air Force responded to the incident with an operational flight.
The ministry did not specify what type of military aircraft was involved.
“An investigation into the suspected airspace violation was launched immediately,” Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen (NCP) said in a ministry press release.
The probe is being conducted by the Finnish Border Guard.
