The Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development (M.W.C.S.D.) has actively promoted a safeguarding initiative that aims at creating safer sports environments in Samoa.
This effort was led by Lakapi Samoa and included training sessions on violence prevention, known as G.B.V. 101, in partnership with U.N. Women Pacific under the Pacific Partnership to End Violence against Women and Girls.
On April, Thursday 23rd, 2026, coaches and teachers from Leifiifi, Vaimauga, and Aana 2 Colleges participated in the G.B.V. 101 training at Lakapi Samoa Headquarters in Tuana’imato.
The training aimed to deepen understanding of respect, non-violence, and positive life skills both on and off the rugby field.
It emphasised that safeguarding is a vital part of Safe Sport, ensuring that sports spaces remain safe for women, children, and young people.
Participants acquired essential skills, including recognising what constitutes violence and understanding its impacts.
They learned how to prevent, report, and respond to abuse safely, as well as familiarise participants with referral pathways and support services available for those affected by violence.
Delivered within the framework of Pola Puipui, the training reflected core Samoan values such as fa’aaloalo (respect), vā tapuai (sacred relationships), and puipuiga (protection).
As part of the program, coaches and teachers received certificates acknowledging their roles as positive role models and safe mentors.
Their commitment helps to ensure rugby remains a safe, respectful, and protective environment.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to use sport as a platform to change attitudes, prevent violence, and foster safer communities across Samoa.
By empowering coaches and teachers, the program promotes a culture of respect and zero tolerance for violence in sports spaces.
In closing, the Ministry expressed gratitude to all participants, emphasizing that true strength is demonstrated through respect and safeguarding.
The collective effort aims to build a stronger, safer Samoa through the power of rugby and shared values.
