PARAMARIBO — The Road Safety Institute (VVI) kicked off international road safety week on Sunday with a bike ride of approximately ten kilometers. According to the organization, not only recreation was central, but above all increasing awareness of safe traffic behavior within society.
Under the theme ‘Pedal for Safe Traffic & Healthy Lifestyle’, young and old left the VVI office on Mahonielaan. They thus gave a positive and active start to a week that is entirely dedicated to road safety and social awareness. Those present included members of the Running Blind Suriname Foundation. Mariska Sabajo from this organization for the blind and visually impaired was on a real ‘tandem’ for the first time.
“With these activities we want to continue to encourage society to participate in traffic more consciously and responsibly”

During the international road safety week, the VVI undertakes various activities aimed at education, prevention and social awareness. The program includes information sessions, educational moments and visits to policy makers. With these visits, the institute wants to draw extra attention to road safety and the importance of structural measures to protect road users.
According to VVI director Joanne A Draai, road safety remains a joint responsibility of government, organizations and citizens. “With these activities we want to continue to encourage society to participate in traffic more consciously and responsibly. Road safety starts with all of us,” the director emphasizes. The VVI hopes that the activities during the week will contribute to more discipline, responsible driving behavior and greater traffic awareness within society.
