Retail sales jumped in August, rebounding after a dismal July and showing that Americans are still opening their wallets even as inflation cuts into their budgets.

Retail sales bounced up 1.2 percent in August, according to the Census Bureau. Sales had fallen by a revised 0.5 percent in July, calling into question the strength of the American consumer.
