So far, their candidacy has been announced by the president of DISY, Annita Dimitriou, and the president of ELAM, Christ Christou.

The vote that will be held next Thursday, June 4will be the first procedure carried out under the new regulation. According to the changes made, in the first round, a majority of 29 votes out of all 56 MPs (50%+1) is required. Then, in the event that no candidate secures the required majority, the two candidates who receive the most votes will proceed to a second round, where he or she who receives the most votes will be elected.

In the event of a tie in the first round between candidates seeking a place in the second round, a run-off vote will be held between them. If the tie remains in the final round, a public lottery is foreseen under the responsibility of the chairman of the session, i.e. the oldest Member of Parliament.

THE DISY announced last week, after a joint session of the Executive Office and the new Parliamentary Group, that he will re-contest the Presidency of the Parliament with the Party President as a candidate, Annita Dimitriou. The decision, as reported, was taken unanimously by both bodies. So far it is considered a given that AKEL, ELAM and Alma will not support Ms. Dimitriou, which would mean her election from the first round only with the support of all MPs of DIKO and Direct Democracy.

On the other hand, the AKEL it is expected that he will take his decisions in his collective bodies, during the session of the Politburo tomorrow, Tuesday, June 2. The party of the Left was criticized by the President of DIKO for its support from the first vote and did not respond negatively. However, it is not excluded that the General Secretary of the party, Stefanos Stefanou, will also run for office.

However, its President DIKONikolas Papadopoulos, although he held exploratory meetings with all the parties, has not yet officially announced whether he will be a candidate himself. Pre-election scenarios that brought the candidacy of Mr. Papadopoulos to receive support from DISY, in the context of wider cooperation, were overturned with the good results brought by DISY in the elections, leaving DIKO open to the possibility of support from other parties.

For his part, the President of ELAMChristos Christou, announced in his public statements that he intends to run for the Presidency of the Parliament on behalf of ELAM, while he has announced that the party is not going to support the candidacy of Annita Dimitriou.

The head of “Jumping» On Thursday, Odysseas Michaelidis held consecutive meetings with the President of DIKO Nikolas Papadopoulos and with the General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanos. In his public statements, Mr. Michaelidis said that “Alma” rules out supporting candidates from DISY, DIKO and ELAM in all rounds of voting.

The decision of its MPs remains unknown so far Direct Democracy, which, according to information, remains firm in its intention to position itself at the last minute as to the position it will take in the election of the Speaker of the House. Direct Democracy has already been approached by both DISY and DIKO regarding the possibility of their support for the Presidency of the Parliament.
