On Thursday, the first participants of the European cross-country championship started arriving at the Vilkyčiai motor sports complex located in Šilutė district.
Part of the athletes came to Lithuania directly from Latvia, where the second stage of the season was held last weekend. Already this weekend in Vilkyčiai, the third meeting of the European Championship awaits them.
The participants’ park, which was opened from Thursday morning, gradually filled up with team equipment, service areas and sports cars.
Until noon, a dozen teams were located here, and as the weekend approaches, their ranks will only increase. More than 80 athletes are registered in the classes of the European Championship this year, and the participants of the national competition will join them.
All the teams had reserved their places in the participants’ park in advance. Some settled closer to the starting area, others chose places near the domestic infrastructure, and some teams set up their equipment and campers near the Veiviržas river.
The first day of arrival is for teams to prepare and rest. The official procedures will start on Friday, when the participants will have to pass the administrative commission and the technical inspection.
At that time, the mechanics will be able to do the final technical preparation work before the race. The engines will roar for the first time on the track on Saturday morning when practice begins.
As the race weekend approaches, the organizers are finishing the final preparations of the track and infrastructure. During the year, the complex underwent a number of renovations, which should improve the experience of both participants and spectators.
According to the organizers, this year’s stage in Vilkyčiai will be unique also because the European Autocross Championship is visiting here for the tenth time.
“Every year, we try to update and improve something in the Vilkyčiai motor sports complex. This year, new asphalt was poured, some barriers were replaced, and an elevator adapted for the disabled was installed in the competition control center.
This will be the tenth, jubilee time, when the engines of European autocross equipment will thunder in Vilkyčiai
Today there are still some small preparatory works, but basically we are already ready to host the third round of the European Motocross Championship.
We are looking forward to the participants coming here, and from Saturday, the spectators as well. This will be the tenth, jubilee time, when the engines of European autocross equipment will thunder in Vilkyčiai”, said Kazimieras Gudžiūnas, the organizer of the competition.
