Brussels, Belgium. AFP. The European Commission expressed this Tuesday its concern about the possible problems of kerosene supply in Europe in “the near future” due to the war in the Middle East.
“Currently” there is no fuel shortage in the EU, declared a Commission spokesperson, Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, at a press conference. “But there could be supply problems in the near future,” he added.
According to her, the “main source of concern” is kerosene.
Last week, the European airports association had warned of a risk of “systemic shortages” of kerosene if maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz was not restored by the end of April.
Around the 20% of the world’s kerosene used to pass through that strategic sea route before the war, blocked by Iran since the end of February in response to bombing by Israel and the United States.
The conflict caused kerosene prices to skyrocket, even more so than oil prices.
On all continents, many airlines increased their prices. They also suspended flights, for reasons of safety or profitability.
