A 37-year-old businessman was shot and killed in his Vistabella mansion on Wednesday morning following a domestic dispute with a woman, according to the official police report.
police were told that the incident began around 2:30 a.m. when Steve Ghany returned home and reportedly argued with the woman over an alleged relationship, escalating into physical violence where the 45-year-old woman said she was assaulted.
The assault continued into the early hours of the morning, according to the woman. Around 8:30 a.m., while the two were in a bedroom, Ghany allegedly drew one of his licensed firearms and fired at the woman, missing her, the police report said.
In response, the woman took possession of one of the man’s licensed firearms and fired several shots, striking him. She called the police and said she had shot and killed Ghany in self-defence.
First responders arriving at the residence at #43-45 Alexander Street found Ghany slouched on the floor in a pool of blood, clad only in boxer shorts. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Crime scene investigators recovered both of the deceased’s licensed firearms: a Glock 19 pistol with a magazine containing nine 9mm rounds and a Sig Sauer pistol with a magazine containing three 9mm rounds. Investigators also retrieved eleven spent 9mm shells.
The woman’s hands were swabbed for gunshot residue, and her clothing, a blue long jeans and plaid shirt, was collected as evidence.
The woman was arrested on the scene and taken to Marabella Health Facility for a preliminary medical assessment before being referred to the San Fernando General Hospital for comprehensive examination.
Senior officers overseeing the investigation include Supt Persad, ASPs Maharaj and Ramsaran, and Inspectors Mohammed, Teeluck, and Wilkinson. First responders at the scene included WPC Cholai, PCs Patrick and Baldeo, while Homicide CSI personnel included PC Young, WPC Harrypersad, and PC Bhagwandeen.
Police have classified the incident as a domestic-related homicide.
