Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro has confirmed that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has recovered a second tranche of firearms and ammunition stolen from the San Fernando Municipal Police Station on Sunday.
He made the announcement during a news conference at the Police Headquarters in Port of Spain earlier today.
“The TTPS has, thus far, successfully recovered 38 firearms: 1 MPX submachine gun, one shotgun, one revolver and 35 pistols. Additionally, 929 rounds of ammunition have been retrieved comprising 900 9mm, ten rounds of .38 caliber and 10 shotgun cartridges,” he said.
This comes on the heels of the recovery of 22 firearms and 612 rounds of 9mm ammunition that was retrieved by police during an overnight intelligence-led operation involving multiple units earlier today.
When asked to provide a count of the stolen inventory, he said: “At this point in time, unfortunately, I’ll be unable to say, as we are still continuing the audit. I have tasked the officers of the police armory to do that audit, and it should be completed in a day or two.”
Guevarro added that the TTPS was “actively pursuing several interventions, aimed at not only the San Fernando Municipal Police, but across the wider municipal service”.
These measures, he said, would seek to “address existing gaps and complement significant changes to safeguard against recurrences of this nature”.
“Immediate reforms are being introduced to strengthen firearm storage and ensure strict adherence to relevant policies and standing orders,” he continued.
Guevarro said that six men, between the ages of 16 and 33, were presently in police custody.
He added that two women and one male, who were detained yesterday, have since been released.
“As enquiries progress, further changes of persons in custody are expected,” he continued.
As investigations continued, he said colleagues of the deceased officer were being interviewed to determine “any and all possibilities of accomplices”.
