A 16-year-old boy was arrested in Amsterdam last Tuesday, June 2, in connection with an explosion on the Amsterdam Zuidas in March. That reports the Public Prosecution Service on Friday. The explosive went off in the revolving door of the Atrium office building, where the American Bank of New York is located.
The attack was claimed on social media by the Islamic resistance organization Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya (Islamic Movement of the Righteous). That group previously claimed anti-Semitic attacks on a synagogue in Liège, a Jewish school in Amsterdam and a synagogue in Rotterdam.
The 16-year-old boy is suspected of being involved in preparing the attack. At the end of April, the police also arrested a 17-year-old boy from Uithoorn arrested on suspicion of involvement in the explosion. He is suspected of having acted with terrorist intent.
The explosion in March caused a fire, which was quickly extinguished by the building’s security guard. According to the police there was “significant damage”, no one was injured.
The sixteen-year-old boy emerged in a police and judicial investigation into the attacks in March at the office building on the Zuidas, the synagogues in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and an attempted attack at a synagogue in Heemstede. The suspect was arraigned on Wednesday and will remain in custody for fourteen days.
