Samoa’s Prime Minister, La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt, returned home last Thursday fully recovered and well-rested following a recent overseas medical check.
By Friday, he had already resumed his official duties, attending Cabinet and delivering his regular weekly press conference.
Speaking to local media, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of adequate rest, acknowledging that since assuming the nation’s top leadership role, he has often overlooked this critical aspect of maintaining good health.
He revealed that doctors had strongly advised him to prioritise rest and maintain consistent working hours before his departure to New Zealand nearly two weeks earlier.
Prior to his trip, medical teams from Fiji and New Zealand travelled to Samoa to conduct a thorough assessment of his condition. The Prime Minister had been preparing to travel for a follow-up examination on a leg that underwent surgery in New Zealand in September 2025, a check-up that had been delayed for several months.
He also disclosed that additional health concerns were identified during pre-travel assessments, but reassured the public that these issues have since been resolved.
“Glory to God,” he said. “Prevention is better than cure.”
The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to the people of Samoa for their prayers and support during his recovery, assuring the nation that he has regained his strength and is ready to continue serving.
“I have returned to Samoa with my strength fully restored,” he said, reiterating that prioritising health and prevention should be a guiding principle for all.
