TEHRAN – Iranian President Masud Pezeshkiyan defended the negotiations between Tehran and Washington, stressing that the protection of national interests and the preservation of the country’s authority are not the policy of his government alone, but the common position of the entire state system.
He said that all key parts of the Iranian establishment have a “common vision and goal” when it comes to talks with the United States.
Pezeškijan emphasized that the position of the Supreme National Security Council, one of the most important bodies for strategic decisions in Iran, is crucial in the negotiation process.
The supreme leader has the final say
According to him, the final decision on the negotiations is made by Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father Ali Khamenei after his death in March.

With these statements, the Iranian president is trying to respond to the criticism of hardliners who see negotiations with the US as giving in under pressure.
Pezeshkiyan previously said that Iran must negotiate with “dignity”, but that rejecting any dialogue is not a logical answer to the crisis.
The negotiations are taking place at a time of great economic pressure, regional tensions and uncertainty surrounding Iran’s nuclear program, he says FLOW.
Additional attention is drawn by the fact that Mojtaba Khamenei, according to Western media, has not been seen in recent publicly confirmed photos or videos since assuming office, while Iranian media publishes written messages attributed to him.
