OPPOSITION Leader Pennelope Beckles has called for the stricter enforcement of safety regulations at Pigeon Point in Tobago, after a seven-year-old girl was struck and killed by a jet ski on Wednesday.
Beckles yesterday issued condolences to the parents and family of Angelica Saydee Jogie, who died after sustaining severe injuries when a jet ski broke into the designated bathing area of the bay, hitting the child; her father, Arnold Jogie; and uncle, Darren Jogie.
Speaking at a news conference at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in Port of Spain, Beckles offered prayers for those who were injured, stating the incident underscored a need for stricter regulations and enforcement.
Calling Angelica’s death “extremely tragic”, she said it was unfortunate that the family had gone to Tobago to enjoy rest and relaxation during the vacation time, as many did during the Easter holidays, and had suffered such a tragedy.
Bring crime plan
Beckles has also called on the Government to end its state of emergency (SoE) and implement a crime plan. Citing a number of murders in the past week, she questioned the purpose of the SoE.
She said since the UNC Government took office in April 2025, the country had spent most of the time under an SoE. “Look at the type of crimes,” Beckles said.
She said while the Government was claiming criminals were afraid, people were under siege and living in fear.
In the meantime, the population was also reeling from the impact of a multitude of increased taxes and fines, while the cost of living also rose, she said.
