Palau Unites for National Earth Month 2026

    Overview:

Palau’s communities came together in a powerful show of unity and environmental stewardship during National Earth Month 2026, turning collective action into measurable impact. From reef restoration to nationwide cleanups, the month-long effort highlighted how local leadership and grassroots participation are driving a more sustainable future across the Republic.

“The Spirit of Kingrohoshi for Successful Communities”

The Republic of Palau once again demonstrated the strength of community stewardship and collective responsibility through the successful observance of National Earth Month 2026 under the continuing theme: “Investing in Our Communities for Success.”

Throughout the month of April, communities, traditional leaders, schools, state governments, NGOs, youth groups, and private sector partners came together in a nationwide effort to protect and restore the natural environment that sustains the people and culture of Palau.

Executive Director Mary Ann Delemel of Rubekul Belau and Director Kiblas Soaladaob of One Reef Micronesia donate to High Schools- EBHS and PMHS for their hard work making a difference on Earth Day 2026.

In recognition of Earth Day on April 22 and the declaration of April 2026 as National Earth Month, activities were organized across the Republic including Dive 4 Earth Day, tree planting projects, reef restoration initiatives, coastal cleanups, the Ocean Stewardship Program in public schools, the Green Fair, Night Market, and community exchange programs promoting sustainability and environmental awareness.

Of particular significance was the nationwide Community Coastal Cleanup and Weed Management Campaign conducted from April 18th through April 25th. Organized in collaboration with Rubekul Belau, the Governors Association, state governments, community organizations, and traditional clubs known as “Cheldebechel,” the campaign focused on roadside and coastal cleanups as well as mitigation of the invasive kebeas vine threatening forest ecosystems throughout Palau.

The penultimate activity on April 25th brought together participating states for an official weigh-in competition overseen by the Earth Day Committee Palau and hosted by Rubekul Belau and the Palau Governors Association in partnership with state traditional community clubs.

Participating states collectively removed more than 12,709 pounds of waste and invasive material, surpassing the previous community cleanup benchmark of 6,194.99 pounds recorded in October 2025 and demonstrating the growing commitment of communities across the nation.

    Official weigh-in standings included:

    1. Ngatpang – 8,184 lbs
    2. Airai – 2,068 lbs
    3. Ngchesar – 1,122 lbs
    4. Angaur – 994 lbs
    5. Melekeok – 838 lbs
    6. Ngarchelong – 308 lbs
    7. Ngermlengui – 154 lbs
    8. Ngaraard – 55 lbs

More than 200 participants from Airai, Ngchesar, Ngatpang, Modekngei High School, Melekeok, and Ngaraard gathered afterward at Melekeok Marina for a community BBQ lunch and Earth Day celebration recognizing the efforts of volunteers, students, cheldebechel and partner organizations.

The celebration also featured educational outreach and interactive activities coordinated by the Earth Day Committee and partner organizations, including the Community Closet initiative by Rengelekel Belau, Vetiver outreach and awareness activities by Natural Resources Conservation Service, environmental trivia hosted by Environmental Quality Protection Board, and reusable bag painting and marine debris games organized by the Palau International Coral Reef Center.

Participating teams and youth groups were recognized during the closing celebration, where various prizes and gift certificates were awarded in recognition of outstanding participation, teamwork, and environmental stewardship.

Rubekul Belau commends the leadership of the Earth Day Committee, the Governors Association, participating states, volunteers, schools, and community partners whose dedication made this national effort possible. These activities are more than symbolic acts of

cleanup—they are investments in healthier communities, stronger partnerships, cultural continuity, and a sustainable future for the next generation.

As environmental pressures and climate challenges continue to affect island communities throughout the Pacific, Palau’s united response serves as a reminder that stewardship begins at the community level and succeeds through collective action.

Together, Palau continues to invest in its communities for success.
