Oman Youth handball team falls to China; focus shifts to Bahrain clash

Oman’s national youth handball team delivered a spirited performance but suffered a 31-26 defeat to host nation China in the 19th Asian Men’s Youth Handball Championship in Zhuzhou, China. Despite the loss, the young Omani side demonstrated resilience, tactical discipline and the ability to compete with one of the tournament’s strongest teams, keeping its hopes of advancing alive ahead of a decisive encounter with Bahrain.

The match, played in front of a large home crowd, showcased the determination of the Omani players, who matched China for long stretches before the hosts capitalized on key moments in the second half to secure victory.

    Evenly Matched Opening Half

China struck first after the opening whistle, but Oman responded immediately, setting the tone for an intense and highly competitive contest. Both teams exchanged goals throughout the opening minutes, with neither side able to establish a clear advantage.

Oman relied on organized defending and quick transitions, frustrating the Chinese attack while creating dangerous scoring opportunities of its own. As the first half progressed, the Omani side grew in confidence and began to dictate the tempo through disciplined teamwork and effective ball movement.

The turning point of the first half came around the 18th minute when Oman built a three-goal lead thanks to impressive attacking displays from Ma’moon Al Hassani, Saeed Al Hassani and Mohammed Al Hassani. Their coordinated movement and accurate finishing repeatedly troubled the Chinese defense, giving Oman its strongest spell of the match.

China, however, gradually recovered and took advantage of a few missed opportunities by Oman. The hosts leveled the score in the 25th minute before edging ahead in the closing moments of the half to take a narrow 15-14 lead into the break.

Strong Fight in the Second Half

Oman entered the second half determined to fight back and quickly resumed the goal-for-goal battle with the home team. The players maintained their intensity on both ends of the court, refusing to allow China to pull away despite constant pressure from the home supporters.

The Omani attack continued to create chances through a variety of offensive combinations, while the defense worked tirelessly to contain China’s physical and fast-paced style of play.

Several crucial moments ultimately proved decisive. Oman missed three penalty throws during the match and failed to convert several clear scoring opportunities, allowing China to maintain its advantage. The hosts gradually increased their lead during the final stages, using their experience and composure to control the closing minutes before sealing a 31-26 victory.

Although the scoreboard favored China, Oman’s performance reflected the steady progress of a talented young squad capable of competing at the highest continental level.

    Officials Remain Optimistic

Head of the Omani delegation Amir Al Dughayshi praised the players for their effort while acknowledging the factors that influenced the result.

“Thank God in all circumstances,” he said. “The players produced an excellent performance. We finished the first half trailing by only one goal after missing three penalty throws.”

He added that several refereeing decisions in the second half favored the host nation but stressed that those calls were not the only reason for the defeat.

“We also missed several one-on-one opportunities and penalty throws. Had we converted those chances, the outcome could have been different. Our qualification hopes are still alive, and we will focus entirely on the upcoming matches.”

Player Abdulaziz Al Saifi echoed that confidence, saying the team fought bravely throughout the contest.

“We delivered a courageous performance and competed strongly against China for the entire match. This defeat does not diminish our effort. We will work on correcting our individual mistakes and be ready for the next challenge.”

Ghassan Al Maashani described the game as an important learning experience.

“It was a true test of our character. Despite the result, we gained valuable confidence that will help us in the remaining matches.”

Meanwhile, Al Khattab Al Hassani emphasized the tactical lessons learned from facing one of the tournament favorites.

“It was a difficult match, but we benefited greatly from it. We are determined to recover quickly and focus on what lies ahead.”

    Attention Turns to Bahrain

There is little time for Oman to dwell on the defeat as the team’s attention has already shifted to a crucial Gulf derby against Bahrain.

The upcoming match is regarded as a must-win encounter that could determine Oman’s chances of progressing to the next stage of the championship. With qualification still within reach, the coaching staff hopes to build on the positive aspects shown against China while improving efficiency in front of goal and reducing costly mistakes.

The Omani players remain confident that their spirited display against the host nation has strengthened their belief ahead of one of the most important matches of their campaign. Victory over Bahrain would keep their qualification hopes alive and move them one step closer to the knockout stage and the ultimate objective of securing a place at the IHF Men’s Youth World Championship.
