Bus operators across Belize are warning of a possible nationwide shutdown as rising fuel costs push the industry to what they call a breaking point. The Belize Bus Association says it has exhausted all options and can no longer absorb the sharp increases in operating expenses. In a letter sent to the Minister of Transport on March thirtieth, the association outlined several proposals aimed at keeping buses on the road, including tax exemptions on fuel and parts, targeted government subsidies, or an adjustment to bus fares. According to the BBA, the government has since indicated it is unable to implement any of those measures at this time. The association says bus services operate on thin margins and that years of rising costs, now worsened by global fuel price hikes, have made continued operation financially unsustainable. As a result, the BBA warns that without urgent intervention, member operators will be forced to discontinue services starting Monday, April twentieth. The BBA is now calling for immediate talks with the Minister of Transport, stressing that a shutdown would impact commuters nationwide and threaten the livelihoods of operators and workers. The association says it remains open to collaboration but insists swift action is needed to prevent major disruption to public transportation across Belize.
