The large amounts of waste at the dump in Kangaatsiaq have been a problem for several years. Next week, they will be inspected for the first time by a naalakkersuisoq, when the naalakkersuisoq for environment, nature, energy and research, Jørgen Rosbach, visits the area.
Two members of Naalakkersuisut, namely chairman of Naalakkersuisut Jens Frederik Nielsen (D) and naalakkersuisoq for environment, nature, energy and research, Jørgen Rosbach (D), are traveling these days.
During the journey, they meet citizens for coffee, and in Uummannaq they visited, among other things, the recently burned down electricity plant.
The journey continues on Sunday to Municipality Qeqertalik. In addition to a cup of coffee, a visit to the dump in Kangaatsiaq is also on the program for Monday. Here, they will most likely be met by the smell from the large amounts of waste that have accumulated over several years.
Will see the waste problem with my own eyes
Waste management is the responsibility of the municipalities, but Jørgen Rosbach still wants to see for himself the large quantities of waste, which have long been the subject of debate.
– It is of course necessary. I want to see what the situation looks like, and at the same time expand my knowledge by meeting the citizens, says Jørgen Rosbach.
The municipal board of Municipality Qeqertalik decided on 11 June that the accumulated amounts of waste in Kangaatsiaq must be removed. The plan is for the dump to be cleared and prepared in November.
– We would like to see what conditions they have regarding waste management right now. I have also decided that we must take pictures so that we can document the conditions. I take that documentation home with me, where it can also be useful in our further work and planning in various areas, says Jørgen Rosbach.
