Belize has lost its longest-living Belizean. Gilbert Winston Ellis, affectionately known as “Mr Bertie”, passed away this morning at 6:20 after weeks of health complications. He was 109 years old and just a little bit over a month away from turning 110.
‘Mr Bertie’ had been admitted to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in his final days before being discharged to spend his last time with family.
Just last year, on September 24th, Belize celebrated his 109th birthday. His advice to Belize was “Be good… very good.”
Mr Bertie’s family tree reached its fifth generation. He was the father of nineteen children, and his descendants numbered far beyond that.
He died in the company of his family, bringing an extraordinary chapter of Belizean history to an end.
