A MEMBER of Parliament has threatened to expel people from his electorate using provisions of the Vagrancy Act.
North Fly MP James Donald said those people who were vagrants and those who were engaged in unlawful conduct in the township of Kiunga would be expelled.
He made the comments after two incidents of alleged drink driving which resulted in the death of a mother and child and a man.
Donald said a woman and her child were hit by a suspected drunk driver three weeks ago, and yesterday morning, a man from Fuma in Nomad was hit by another drunk driver.
Attempts to get comments from police was unsuccessful.
“The two drunk drivers responsible for deaths are both from the Highlands region.
“They have been arrested and are at the Kiunga Police Station,” Donald said.
“The relatives of the deceased from Fuma, and the frustrated relatives of the previous killing of a Yongom mother and child, together with the locals in Kiunga town mobilised and protested in retaliation yesterday morning.”
“The police in Kiunga with the help of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force managed to contain the situation from escalating.”
Donald thanked the security forces for their quick action in containing the situation.
He said through the district development authority they will put in place stricter control measures to deal with drunk driving, to avoid similar incidents from happening in future, and to safeguard people’s lives.
“Those from other parts of PNG who are doing nothing and causing law and order problems in the district will be identified through proper process and repatriated back to their provinces,” he added.
