A woman detained by the police at the residence where San Fernando businessman Steve Ghany Junior was shot dead after a domestic dispute on Wednesday, remains in custody as investigations continue.
Officers found two firearms, 11 spent shells and Ghany’s bloody body in a bedroom of his sprawling residence on Alexander Road, Sumadh Gardens in Vistabella.
The 45-year-old woman allegedly told officers that the incident unfolded over several hours and involved accusations, heated arguments and physical confrontations, ultimately culminating in a fatal exchange of gunfire at the family’s mansion.
The woman was photographed and both of her hands were swabbed for gunshot residue by the Southern Divisional Crime Scene investigator.
Her clothing – a pair of long blue jeans and a multi-coloured plaid shirt – was also taken as evidence by the police.
The mother of two was taken by police officers for medical treatment before she was placed under guard, while homicide investigators spent hours processing the residence and collecting evidence to piece together the circumstances surrounding the killing.
A police report on the fatal incident stated that the woman contacted them and informed them of the shooting that occurred around 8.30 a.m.
According to the police report, the woman stated that the confrontation began around 2.30 a.m. when Ghany returned home, arguments about infidelity accusations broke out, and she was physically assaulted.
She alleged that the physical assault and arguments continued throughout the early hours of the morning.
She allegedly told officers that around 8.30 a.m., she and Ghany were in their bedroom when he drew his licensed firearm and began firing shots in her direction, which missed her.
She allegedly told detectives that she took one of Ghany’s licensed firearms and fired several shots that hit him.
He fell, and she contacted the police, and officers arrived on the scene minutes later.
The first officers at the scene were escorted to a bedroom located on the western side of the upper floor of their two-storey residence, where they observed Ghany seated on the floor in a slouched position, motionless and unresponsive in a pool of blood with gunshot wounds.
Officers of the Crime Scene Investigations Unit retrieved from the scene a Glock 19 pistol with a magazine and nine rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition, a Sig Sauer pistol with a magazine and three rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition, and 11 spent shells.
The police report stated that the E999 command centre was contacted around 9.08 a.m. on Wednesday, and the woman reported that she shot and killed Ghany in self-defence at their home on Alexander Road.
She was taken to the Marabella District Health Facility, where a preliminary medical assessment was conducted, and then referred to the San Fernando General Hospital for a comprehensive medical examination.
A post-mortem is expected to be done on Ghany this week at the Forensic Science Centre in Federation Park.
WPC Murren of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations of Region Three is continuing investigations.
