Panama’s security establishments More than 2,500 agents were deployed this Saturday in a joint operation within the La Joyita Penitentiary Centeras part of a coordinated strategy to reinforce control after the escape of 195 inmates this Monday, June 1.
That massive escape left three inmates dead and six injured. In addition, three National Police officers were reported injured.
The Ministry of Public Security reiterated that the action includes a comprehensive search and inspection work in the prison, with the participation of the National Police, the National Aeronaval Service, the National Border Service, the National Immigration Service and the Unique Prehospital Emergency Management System.
The operation is also coordinated by the Ministry of Government and the General Directorate of the Penitentiary System.
According to the entity, the deployment brings together more than 2,500 troops and support personnel from the different institutions involved, in one of the largest joint actions recently carried out within a penitentiary center.
In addition, the agents carry out registration and inspection tasks aimed at strengthening institutional control mechanisms, removing prohibited objects and verifying security conditions within La Joyita.
Coordination between the different levels seeks to integrate human, logistical and operational resources to maintain order and guarantee control of prison facilities.
The participation of the security forces is part of an inter-institutional work strategy to address security challenges within the prison system.
The Ministry of Security indicated that the operation is part of the measures adopted by the State to strengthen security in the country’s prisons.
The entity added that the deployment aims to preserve effective control of the facilities and support the supervisory actions developed by the prison authorities.
Until June 5, 29 of the 195 escaped inmates had to be located. In addition, it was highlighted that the prisoners were surrendering, but how many were not revealed.
On the other hand, a total of 134 inmates had also appeared before a guarantee judge. The Attorney General’s Office highlighted that the judicial processes were continuing.
