Monaco commits €67.9 million to expand regional rail capacity – NEWS.MC

Monaco has announced a major investment in regional rail transport, committing €67.9 million towards the purchase of four additional TER trainsets as part of ongoing efforts to improve mobility to and from the Principality.

The funding agreement, signed with SNCF Sud Azur, will see the new trains enter service during the first half of 2028, further strengthening capacity on one of the busiest commuter corridors in the region.

The latest investment builds on Monaco’s long-standing support for rail infrastructure. The Principality previously financed five trainsets in 2008 and ordered two more in 2024, which are scheduled to begin operating in 2027. Once all Monaco-funded trains are delivered, nearly a third of the rolling stock serving the line will have been financed by the Principality.

In the short term, the additional trains will allow operators to run more double-length services, increasing passenger capacity and improving comfort during busy periods. Longer-term benefits are expected following the introduction of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), a modern signalling technology also supported by Monaco.

The combination of additional rolling stock and upgraded signalling is expected to significantly increase service frequency between Nice and Monaco, with authorities targeting a train every ten minutes during peak hours.

Officials estimate the improvements could boost peak-time passenger capacity on the route by around two-thirds, increasing the number of travellers able to use the service each day from roughly 12,000 to nearly 20,000.

Rail transport plays a crucial role in Monaco’s mobility network, serving commuters, residents and visitors alike. Passenger numbers at Monaco-Monte-Carlo station have continued to rise in recent years, reaching approximately 9.4 million travellers in 2025, making it one of the busiest regional stations in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region.

Government Minister for Equipment, Environment and Urban Planning Céline Caron-Dagioni said the investment reflects Monaco’s commitment to improving daily travel and meeting growing transport demand through sustainable long-term solutions.
