The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has confirmed the presence of arms and weaponry in the country that do not belong to the military, raising concerns over national security.
In a statement, the RFMF Commander Ro Jone Kalouniwai said joint intelligence operations have identified an organised criminal network attempting to destabilise the country.
“Investigations have identified the presence of unauthorized weaponry, verified as being outside of the RFMF’s official inventory,” he said.
The RFMF warned that documentation gathered during investigations suggests the group has ongoing intentions to target key state infrastructure.
“Documentation suggests a continued intent by this network to target state infrastructure, posing a credible threat to public safety,” the statement said.
The military has reassured the public that it remains committed to protecting all Fijians and will act decisively against any threats.
“We reiterate that any attempt to destabilize the nation or unlawfully access military assets will be met with firm, lawful, and proportionate action,” said Mr Kalouniwai.
It also issued a warning to members of the public, stressing that assisting those involved in such activities is a serious offence under Fiji law.
The Joint Task Force, according to the RFMF, continues to carry out operations aimed at neutralising the threat and restoring a safe and stable environment.
