Georgian Dream-elected President Mikheil Kavelashvili visits Kazakhstan, where he participated in the Regional Ecological Summit and met with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Accompanied by a delegation including Georgian Dream Agriculture Minister Davit Songhulashvili, Presidential Administration Head Ketevan Kvinikadze, and Deputy Georgian Dream Foreign Minister Aleksandre Khvtisiashvili, Kavelashvili arrived at Astana airport on April 21, where senior Kazakh officials, including Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov, welcomed him.
The Regional Ecological Summit 2026, held in Astana from April 22 to 24, is initiated by the Kazakhstan President and organized in partnership with the United Nations, bringing together the regional governments, as well as international organizations and the scientific community, “to develop coordinated solutions to climate change and environmental challenges.”
According to Kavelashvili, the Presidents of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Mongolia, and Armenia, and the Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, as well as “senior representatives of various international organizations,” are attending the summit.
On April 22, Kavelashvili said he addressed the summit participants. “As I noted in my remarks, environmental protection is no longer just a subject of political debate, but also has an impact on our countries’ economies, societies, and the daily lives of citizens,” he wrote on social media.
“Climate change, water security, risks of biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution are closely interconnected challenges that increasingly threaten the resilience of our societies and economic stability. In this context, I noted that Georgia offers a clear vision based on strengthening environmental governance, developing climate policy, and promoting green and inclusive growth,” he added.
On April 22, Kavelashvili also said he met the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and discussed with him “bilateral relations” and “the deepening of cooperation across various sectors.” He added, “As I stated at the meeting, the Middle Corridor has the potential for expansion, and joint efforts must be intensified to develop this route further.”
