The Prime Minister is in Tallinn on Tuesday to discuss defense policy with heads of state from the Nordic and Baltic countries.
It’s soon four and a half years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine, and Denmark and a number of countries around the world have supported the Ukrainians in those years with, among other things, weapons.
The support must not stop, says Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S).
– We must increase support for Ukraine and increase the pressure on Russia, the prime minister says on X without elaborating on how the support should be increased further.
The announcement comes after what she calls “important discussions” with Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyj, in Tallinn, Estonia.
Here, state leaders from the Nordic and Baltic countries had a meeting on Tuesday under the auspices of NB8, which precisely consists of the Nordic and Baltic countries.
Zelenskyj also participated in the meeting, where closer defense cooperation in the Nordics and Baltics was on the agenda.
Due to the general election, in recent months there has been quite silence regarding the Danish contributions to Ukraine.
But the newly appointed Minister of Defence, the Social Democrat Jeppe Bruus, touched on the subject last week in connection with the formation of the government and the transfer of ministers in the Ministry of Defence. Here he replaced Venstre’s chairman, Troels Lund Poulsen, in the post.
In his speech, Jeppe Bruus ended by switching to English to send a “special greeting” directly to Ukraine.
– I am really looking forward to a very close collaboration. Denmark is steadfast in its support for Ukraine.
– As the new defense minister, I want to continue the close dialogue and try to live up to the work of my predecessor, said Jeppe Bruus.
In general, Ukraine also featured heavily in the speeches from the Ministry of Defence’s head of department and Troels Lund Poulsen.
And Jeppe Bruus pointed out that the change of minister does not mean a change in Danish support for Ukraine.
Jeppe Bruus also thanked Troels Lund Poulsen for his work in the Ministry of Defence.
– We cannot praise and thank you enough for the effort which has meant an incredible amount for our country.
– There is enough to deal with. It is obvious that the fight for a free, independent Ukraine must be continued, said Jeppe Bruus, among other things.
Heads of state and government from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are participating in NB8. Estonia holds the NB8 presidency in 2026.
