Ulaanbaatar, April 24, 2026 /MONTSAME/. The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), in
cooperation with the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, organized the 152nd IPU
Assembly and related meetings in Istanbul on April 15-19.
The “parliament of parliaments” drew over 1,500 delegates,
including more than 720 parliamentarians from 126 countries. Mongolia
was represented by Nominchimeg
O., Member of Parliament,
Chair of the Standing Committee on Petitions and Chair of
the IPU Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians, and Member of Parliament Munkhsoyol B.
The Mongolian delegates participated in plenary and
committee sessions and held meetings with IPU, parliamentary leaders and
members from other countries. They also conveyed an official letter from
Speaker of Parliament Byambatsogt S. to IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong.
At the closing session, delegates unanimously adopted the Istanbul
Declaration, proposed by Speaker of Türkiye’s Grand National Assembly Numan
Kurtulmuş, titled “Nurturing Hope, Securing Peace, and Ensuring Justice for
Future Generations.”
An emergency agenda item, titled “The
urgent need for concerted parliamentary efforts to preserve ceasefires and
support peacebuilding in the Middle East and other regions,” was added.
The proposal was
jointly submitted by Qatar, Turkey, Australia,
France, Brazil,
Zambia, Poland,
Portugal, Italy,
as well as the Arab Group, the Latin American and Caribbean Group, and the
African Group, with the aim of addressing ongoing wars and armed conflicts
facing the global community. A vote to proceed with drafting the relevant resolution was
held and received majority support.
During the Assembly, a new IPU Secretary General was
elected. Romania’s candidate, Ambassador Anda Filip, won with 72% of the vote.
Women made up 37% of participants, while 13% were under the age of 40.
