“It should not be underestimated that now is a unique moment when the president of the United States, the president of Russia and the president of China are categorically against the Europeans. So, this is the moment when we should wake up,” Macron said.
“We have to be a little more confident and offer our program,” he added.
The President of France expects that tensions in relations with the United States will continue even after the end of the presidential term of Donald Trump.
“This is a historical trend. We can cooperate with the US on some issues, and it still makes sense because of shared values and historical ties, but I really believe that this US approach will continue,” he added.
He noted that the main difference between Trump’s first and second terms was that many European countries saw the first term as an aberration that would end and did not require fundamental changes.
“Now many colleagues have a more sober vision, because after so many years we say: OK, we have to react. We have to act like Europeans, be more united, defend ourselves and our own interests. And for me, this is the right direction,” Macron said.
Macron flew to Athens after an informal meeting of the European Council in Cyprus. Greece and France are set to sign an agreement on Saturday to renew a bilateral security pact.
We will remind: The signing aims to update the agreement reached in 2021 between Macron and Mitsotakis, which included a clause on mutual defense and Greek commitments purchase French warships in the amount of at least 3 billion euros.
The media reported that during the visit, Macron will make an offer to Greece transfer 43 Mirage fighters to Ukraine exchange for a bargain.
