The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, expressed this Tuesday his solidarity with Pope Leo XIV and defended the right to demonstrate without fear after the criticism launched by the American president, Donald Trump, after the pontiff questioned the war in Iran.
“No one should be afraid of anyone”Lula stated to the Brasil247 portal, to Fórum Magazine and to the Diario do Centro do Mundo (DCM), during the interview he gave to these three progressive media outlets at the Planalto Presidential Palace.
The Brazilian head of state criticized the behavior of the Republican leader, considering that his statements and threats “they do no good for democracy” or the multilateral system, and maintained that a leader must choose between being “feared or loved.”
Lula defended the role of dialogue and words in the face of confrontation and affirmed that the international community must strengthen spaces for cooperation to preserve peace.
The statements occur after Trump will harshly criticize the Pope for his opposition to the war in Iran that the US and Israel initiated on February 28 and accused it of being “weak against crime and terrible in foreign policy.”
The American president spread also an image of him represented as Jesus on social networks, which generated rejection in religious sectors.
The pontiff responded that he does not fear the US Administration and reiterated his commitment to “raise your voice to build peace.”
