Legislation: Voters are lost between reality and artificial intelligence

Legislation: Voters are lost between reality and artificial intelligence

Advertising and promotional banners displaying male and female candidates with an elegant appearance and precise text, bright designs and coherent, expressive and modern slogans… filters and changes in the features of women candidates, to hide wrinkles and circles around tired eyes… content that appears carefully composed and without technical lapses… and predictions using artificial intelligence agents… all of them are uses and tools that these applications provide for new candidates.

In the last twenty-four hours of the launch of the electoral campaign for legislation on July 2nd, attention has been drawn to the invasion of flyers and advertising banners in the virtual space, branded with the use of artificial intelligence technology in the content presented, which has made the use of this technology an exception and a novelty at this stage.

In this regard, the pioneers of social networking pages interacted, focusing especially on the content that shows beautiful women who decided to enter the electoral arena.

The “trends” of social media platforms in this regard were divided between those criticizing them on the basis that they are “deception” and “misleading” the voter and do not show him the true level and appearance of the candidate, and those welcoming these new uses, as an aesthetic and practical addition that facilitates the electoral campaign, saves time, effort and money for the candidates and makes them more involved in displaying their qualifications.

In one of the pictures, several pages circulated a propaganda poster bearing a picture of female candidates, and they appear in advertising positions for a cosmetic product, rather than propaganda for an important political position. Returning to the origin of the images in the accounts of the concerned women, it turns out that they were generated by artificial intelligence, while preserving the real identities and features of the concerned subjects, but it is clear that the candidates “begged” to apply artificial intelligence, and most likely “Gemanay”, to add improvements and aesthetics to their beauty, considering that this application affiliated with “Google” is more effective in generating images and animations, compared to the applications of the Chinese “Deep Sick” and “GBT Chat” or “Pubplexity” and others.

Al-Khabar monitored many posters marked with the letters IA, which are the first letters of the term artificial intelligence in French, or vice versa in English, all of which helped the candidates spread their ideas and identities among the public.

The extensive use of artificial intelligence techniques led some curious people to monitor and hunt old photos of some candidates and make comparisons between real photos and others that have undergone electronic enhancements, to highlight the differences and new fingerprints on the photos. These behaviors turned the posters of girls who ran for office in large numbers into a phenomenon in their own right in the current elections, and attracted a lot of attention and comments on social media at various levels and audiences.

The uses of artificial intelligence applications were not limited to the image and the details of features, but rather extended to the text, speech, and political and electoral messages, and it seemed clear that many of the candidates’ propaganda leaflets were formulated based on this technology, given the structure, style, and vocabulary of the text, as they are indicators and standards on the basis of which the extent of the technology’s intervention in editing the text can be known.

Observers went further in hypothesizing and forecasting the use of artificial intelligence in the ongoing election campaign to influence voters’ tendencies, and did not rule out the creation of what is called “agent IA,” and programming it for specific tasks to be carried out in virtual space. These are tools and paths known to specialists in performing some actions that are characterized by repetition and similarity.

Despite the legitimacy of the many uses of this technology, there are questions and warnings about the need to be careful to consider ethics and the law in the process of exploiting this frightening and convenient technology at the same time.
