On June 10, the former head of the DFP furnished a public letter informing the base that he was stepping down after more than five years of tenureship, and explaining the circumstances surrounding his choice.

Hurtault’s words pointed to a deterioration in the country’s political affairs, citing the current ‘vitriolic’ norm present in politics as a major contributor to his decision, as well as more personal considerations. He also said he intends to continue to serve Dominica from outside the political sphere.

Meanwhile, in a press release, the DFP thanked the outgoing leader for his service to the party, wishing him well.

In its statement, the executive outlined the vision of the party from its inception in 1968 to the present day, saying that it was formed on the principles of “responsible governance” and “the rule of law”.

“The party has served the people of Dominica well and faithfully while in opposition, as well as in government, and [has] always fostered that of good governance, aimed at uplifting the standard of political discourse,” said the statement.

Describing the party’s years in government (from 1980 to 1995) as “a period during which respectability was restored,” the DFP said that it wants to reassure the public that it will continue to work toward safeguarding democracy and accountability in governance, for the country’s improvement.

“We wish to thank everyone who, over the years, has been of service to our country through the medium of the DFP,” concluded that statement.

    Press Release

On the resignation of Bernard Hurtault as Interim Political Leader, The Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) Executive Committee has accepted the resignation letter of Mr. Bernard Hurtault, dated Wednesday, June 10, 2026, as interim political leader of the party, after having served in that position for more than five (5) years. The executive committee wishes to thank Mr. Hurtault for his service to the party and wish him well.

The Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) was formed in 1968 on the basis of democratic principles, the rule of law, and to advance good, accountable, and responsible governance in Dominica.

The party has served the people of Dominica well and faithfully while in opposition, as well as in government, and have always fostered that of good governance, aimed at uplifting the standard of political discourse, as well as fostering a high level of participatory engagement in forging a clear path to develop the country democratically and economically for all citizens.

The Dominica Freedom Party served the country and its people in government 1980-1995, a period which, many will agree was the best growth and development experienced in the history of the country.

It was a period during which respectability was restored; the economy was expanded with growth in several sectors, including agricultural, investment in tourism, and the establishment of businesses and industries, thereby creating a number of jobs.

Correspondingly, there were substantial improvements in the areas of healthcare, housing and infrastructural development across the island, among others, which positively impacted the socio-economic well-being of the people of Dominica.

The party, through the Executive Committee, wishes to assure its members and the people of Dominica that it remains resolute in its pursuit of a better Dominica.

A Dominica where the principles of democracy and good, accountable governance are assured in the Commonwealth of Dominica, while at the same time building a stronger Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) going forward.

We wish to thank everyone who, over the years, has been of service to our country through the medium of the DFP.
