The Attorney General of the Republic, Larry Devoe, committed this Friday to the defense of human rights in the country, after Parliament elected him to occupy this position, which Tarek William Saab held until about three months ago.
Larry Daniel Devoe Márquez, a lawyer graduated from the Andrés Bello Catholic University and a specialist in criminal law, criminology, constitutional law and human rights, officially assumed the position, which he already held as interim.
Devoe, 46 years old, until now served as executive secretary of the National Human Rights Council and agent of the State before international bodies on the matter. The National Assembly, with a pro-government majority, appointed him on Thursday, April 9 with 275 votes in favor and swore him in immediately.
In a message published on the social network X, Devoe expressed his “commitment to justice” and thanked the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, for the trust placed in his career.
«From this moment, I reaffirm my commitment to the defense of human rights and the protection of our people. We will continue to work firmly for accessible, transparent and efficient justice for all Venezuelans,” he wrote.
The new prosecutor inherits from Saab a Public Ministry that faces strong international criticism for its role in the judicialization of the opposition, the persecution of political dissidents and the lack of independent investigations into human rights violations.
Organizations such as the UN and the International Criminal Court documented these allegations.
Devoe, according to experts, must rebuild the credibility of the Public Ministry before the international community, advance the transparency and accessibility of justice and respond to demands for justice in pending human rights cases. His profile as a human rights specialist generates expectations about a possible turn towards a more balanced management, although his closeness to Chavismo raises doubts among opposition sectors.
