(KPL) In a move to strengthen bilateral energy cooperation, Malaythong Kommasith met with Thailand’s newly appointed Energy Minister Akkanut Promphan to reinforce energy stability between the two countries.
The meeting, held in Bangkok, marked the first official working session between the two ministers following Akkanut’s assumption of office in March 2026. Against a backdrop of global economic volatility and growing uncertainty in energy supply, both sides underscored the need for closer collaboration to ensure stability and safeguard energy security vital to their economies.
Energy Trade Remains a Key Pillar
The ministers highlighted the energy sector as a cornerstone of Lao-Thai economic, trade, and investment relations. In 2025, Laos exported more than US$2.34 billion worth of electricity to Thailand, while Thailand supplied approximately US$1.5–1.8 billion in refined petroleum products to Laos.
Strong Investment Presence
Thai investment continues to play a major role in Laos’ energy sector. Currently, Thai investors are involved in 22 energy projects across the country. Of these, six projects are under construction, with a combined installed capacity of 3,613.2 megawatts and a total investment value of US$5.28 billion.
An additional 16 projects have reached commercial operation, contributing 7,688.9 megawatts in capacity and representing US$9.48 billion in investment. Altogether, Thai energy investments in Laos—both operational and under development—total US$14.76 billion.
Toward a Strategic Energy Partnership
The discussions were described as warm and constructive, with both sides expressing a shared vision to expand cooperation under a strategic partnership for sustainable growth and development.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Minister Malaythong extended an official invitation to Minister Akkanut and his delegation to visit Laos for further discussions aimed at deepening cooperation and delivering greater benefits to the people of both nations.
