The first day of Lao New Year 2569, known as Sangkhan Luang, was celebrated across the Lao People’s Democratic Republic with a lively atmosphere, reflecting the preservation of traditional culture and customs.
The day, which fell on Tuesday, April 14, marked the official start of the New Year festivities. Temples nationwide brought out Buddha images for ceremonial water pouring, in line with long-standing traditions. The activities created a joyful environment while maintaining peace, safety, and the cultural identity of the Lao people.
In Vientiane, a variety of events were organized to celebrate the occasion. Religious ceremonies took place at Wat Ong Teu Mahawihan and Wat Si Saket, where Buddha images were brought out for ritual bathing. The ceremonies were led by senior Buddhist leaders and attended by President Thongloun Sisoulith, along with his spouse and senior Party and government officials.
Later in the day, Buddha images were placed on ceremonial vehicles and paraded along designated routes, allowing the public to pour water over them as a gesture of respect and to receive blessings for the New Year.
Residents also visited temples across the capital to take part in traditional water-pouring ceremonies. Many families paid respect to elders, including parents and grandparents, to express gratitude and seek blessings, symbolizing the transition from the old year to the new.
The celebrations highlighted the continued preservation of Laos’ cultural heritage and traditions, ensuring they remain an enduring part of national identity.
