The former president Luis Lacalle Pou This Tuesday he called for advance a port project in your country to give exit to the sea to Paraguaya country that exports its products to the world through Paraguay-Paraná Waterway.
“I am not going to die without really seeing that Paraguay has an exit to the sea in Uruguay“I am convinced that we have to move forward in that,” he said. Lacalle Pou during his participation in a conversation in the Guaraní country.
In this sense, the former president pointed out that “there are already businessmen who are making their investments” and analyzing places for the eventual construction of a Paraguayan port in Uruguay.
“I know they have other places for their logistics, but if you see the map of the region, Uruguay should naturally be Paraguay’s outlet to the seaand that would leave Paraguayans with enormous peace of mind,” added Lacalle Pou.
Lacalle Pou was in the Paraguayan city of Santa Ritawithin the framework of the ten years of alliance between the local company Sul América Insumos Agrícolas and the Uruguayan Proquimur.
Paraguay began in 2022, under the Presidency of Mario Abdo Benítez (2018-2023), a series of explorations to have a presence with “sovereignty” in a coastal territory of Uruguay that allows him “access to the world,” said the then president.
Without referring to the project of his predecessor, whose progress has not been announced, the current Paraguayan president, Santiago Peña, supported the call made this day by Lacalle Pou. “Uruguay is certainly our outlet to the sea,” Peña said at the same event, without giving further details.
Paraguayan exports, with transactions to 148 countries, totaled from January to December 2025 a total of 16,720.3 million dollarsa 5.8% more than those accumulated in 2024according to a foreign trade report from the Central Bank of Paraguay.
For these exports, the use of the Paraguay-Paraná Waterwayan extensive river corridor of more than 3,400 kilometers that connects Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay, and that facilitates the Paraguayan exit to the Atlantic Ocean.
