More than 250 people accessed free health screenings, wellness education and medical support last Thursday as the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) hosted a Health and Wellness Fair at St William Grant Park in downtown Kingston as part of its 250th anniversary celebrations.
The outreach initiative formed part of the hospital’s year-long commemoration under the theme ‘250 Years of Healing Jamaica’, which highlights KPH’s long-standing contribution to healthcare and its continued commitment to community wellness.
The fair brought together healthcare professionals from various hospital departments and a wide range of public- and private-sector partners to offer free screenings, health information and preventative care services to members of the public. Participating KPH departments included the Renal Unit, Nursing Department, Physiotherapy Department, Dietary Services and the Know Your Numbers initiative. Several healthcare and community partners also supported the event.
Patrons benefited from a range of free services, including blood pressure checks, body mass index assessments, cholesterol testing, vision screenings, Pap smears and mammograms. Health professionals were also on hand to answer questions, provide guidance on preventative care, and share information on reducing the risk of chronic illnesses.
For many attendees, the fair provided an opportunity to complete important routine health checks that may otherwise have been postponed. Others received advice on managing existing conditions and adopting healthier lifestyles.
KPH Acting Chief Executive Officer Dwayne Francis said the fair reflected the institution’s long-standing commitment to serving Jamaicans beyond the walls of the hospital.
“This health fair reflects the hospital’s enduring commitment to improving the health of Jamaicans, giving back to communities we proudly serve,” he said. “For 250 years, KPH has been a pillar of healthcare in Jamaica, providing compassionate, quality care to generations of patients.”
Francis said the health fair aligned with the hospital’s mission to improve access to healthcare services and strengthen public awareness of disease prevention and healthy living.
“As we celebrate this historic milestone, we remain committed to extending our services beyond the hospital and into the community,” he said.
The event also underscored the importance of preventative healthcare at a time when Jamaica continues to grapple with a high burden of non-communicable diseases. Healthcare workers encouraged attendees to take advantage of regular screenings and seek medical advice early, noting that timely intervention can play a critical role in improving health outcomes.
Minister of Health and Wellness Dr Christopher Tufton, who attended the fair, praised the hospital’s staff for their dedication and years of service to the Jamaican people.
“Today is also about celebrating the dedicated staff of Kingston Public Hospital, who continue to serve Jamaicans every day, often under very difficult circumstances, but with unwavering commitment,” he said.
Tufton also highlighted the institution’s historic role in healthcare delivery, describing the KPH as the leading trauma centre in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.
“Despite the challenges, Kingston Public Hospital remains the number-one trauma centre in Jamaica and the Caribbean. Chances are, if you’re from downtown Kingston or anywhere across Jamaica, you know someone whose life has been saved here. That is a legacy worth celebrating,” he said.
Looking to the future, the minister pointed to plans to modernise the country’s healthcare infrastructure, including the development of a new hospital facility.
“As we celebrate 250 years of Kingston Public Hospital, we are also committing to the next 250 years by putting plans in place for a new hospital that will benefit you, your children, and your children’s children,” Tufton said.
The KPH said additional medical missions and anniversary activities are planned throughout the year as part of the celebrations, culminating in the hospital’s official 250th anniversary observance in December.
