Both the chairman of Naalakkersuisut Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen confirm in a press release that an agreement has now been secured with the USA to strengthen security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic area.
The dispute between the United States and Greenland and Denmark has now reached its end.
Greenland, Denmark and the USA expect to be able to sign an agreement in the coming week that will strengthen security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic area. This is how the message reads in a press release from the Prime Minister’s Office.
– It is gratifying that we are about to enter into an agreement that ensures and strengthens the security of Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the USA and the Western alliance. The agreement recognizes Greenland’s interests and our place in international cooperation. It is beneficial for all of us, says the chairman of Naalakkersuisut Jens-Frederik Nielsen (D) in a press release.
On January 14, 2026, Greenland, Denmark and the USA initiated a working group to reach an agreement between the countries after US President Donald Trump repeatedly wanted to gain control over Greenland on the grounds of “national security”. The working group had to secure a framework that all countries could agree to.
Expected signature in the coming week
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (Soc.) is also pleased with the agreement:
– I am happy that there is a prospect of a good agreement for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark and the USA. An agreement that strengthens our common security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic area and is thus also good for NATO and Europe. And an agreement that simultaneously recognizes the Kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination, says Mette Frederiksen.

Donald Trump writes on Truth Social that Denmark, the USA and Greenland have entered into an agreement on Greenland that gives the USA “control over security”.
