Ulaanbaatar,
April 6, 2026 /MONTSAME/. Mongolian
cyclist Jambaljamts Sainbayar has become the first Mongolian to compete in the
elite professional classic Tour of Flanders
in Belgium.
Riding
for Spain’s Burgos Burpellet BH, he
featured in the 278.2 km race and rode in the leading breakaway during the
first half, showcasing Mongolia on the international stage. Commentators on Eurosport noted that he was the first Mongolian
cyclist to take part in the prestigious race and praised his strong
performance. Jambaljamts
later abandoned the race after the 153 km mark.
Known
locally as “Ronde,” the race—first held in 1919—is famous for its cobbled
sections and short, steep climbs. It is one of cycling’s five Monument races
and is widely regarded as one of the most demanding events on the UCI WorldTour
calendar. This year’s edition was further complicated by rain and strong winds,
with 54 riders failing to finish.
