The football team of Bosnia and Herzegovina will play a friendly match against Panama on June 6, and that news once again started an interesting story on social networks about an unusual saying that exists in that Central American country.
In Panama, there is an expression “Estar en Bosnia”, which literally means “being in Bosnia”, and it is used to describe a person who is completely lost, confused or does not know what to do in life. Interestingly, this term is not used in any other South or Central American country.
The Bosnian travel blogger Robert Dacešin wrote about this a few years ago, who noted that the sentence “Ese pobrecito esta en Bosnia” would mean approximately “this poor man is completely lost.”
As for the origin of the expression, the exact explanation is not known. Dacešin assumes that it is about the fact that Bosnia is so far from Panama that in the local perception it represents a distant and completely unknown place.
