On the occasion of marking the anniversary of the restoration of independence of Montenegro and in anticipation of the Statehood Day, the Embassy of Montenegro in the Kingdom of Belgium organized a reception in Brussels, which was attended by the Vice President of the Government of Montenegro and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ervin Ibrahimović.
Addressing the dignitaries, Ibrahimović pointed out that the anniversary of twenty years since the restoration of independence and Statehood Day represent an opportunity to acknowledge the historical continuity of Montenegrin statehood, the libertarian tradition and the values on which Montenegro is building its European future today, the MFA said.
Speaking about the historical significance of July 13, he emphasized, as they say, that that date unites the international recognition of Montenegro at the Congress of Berlin in 1878 and the first mass anti-fascist uprising in Europe in 1941, and that both events bear witness to Montenegro’s permanent commitment to freedom, dignity and the right to independently decide its future.
“Two historical moments united in one date carry one permanent message: that the continuity of Montenegrin statehood is measured by the ability of its people to choose their own future, preserve their dignity and always be on the right side of history,” said Ibrahimović.
He pointed out that the restoration of independence in 2006 was a democratic confirmation of the state continuity of Montenegro, while membership in NATO further strengthened its position as a reliable ally and responsible member of the international community.
Speaking about European integration, Ibrahimović reminded that Montenegro is working intensively on closing the negotiation chapters by the end of this year, with the aim of becoming the next full member of the European Union in 2028.
“Reflecting on the relations between Montenegro and Belgium, he emphasized that the two countries share a common commitment to freedom, democracy, international law and European values. He also pointed to the long tradition of bilateral relations, as well as the importance of continuous Belgian support for the European integration of Montenegro, which was also confirmed during the recent visit of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium Maxim Prevo to Montenegro”, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The minister also expressed special gratitude to our diaspora, stressing that the diaspora carries Montenegro with them through their work, successes and dignity.
“You make our voice stronger, our presence warmer, and the ties between Montenegro and Belgium more human and lasting,” said Ibrahimović.
