László Brenzovics, President of the KMKSZ
At its general assembly to elect new officers, the Hungarian Cultural Association of Transcarpathia (KMKSZ) re-elected László Brenzovics as its president for another three-year term. The president stated that the KMKSZ strives to maintain good relations with Ukrainian state and local authorities, as well as with the Hungarian government and all parliamentary parties in Hungary.
László Brenzovics joined the general assembly online because after the Ukrainian secret service conducted a raid on his home in Uzhhorod (Ungvár) and several institutions linked to the KMKSZ with the deployment of commandos in late 2020, he left Ukraine and has been residing abroad ever since.
In his presidential report analyzing the events of the past three years, he emphasized that, despite the war, it was extremely important that the election of officers was successfully conducted in accordance with the KMKSZ’s bylaws in all local chapters of the association—which has over 32,000 members—from Uzhhorod to Yasinia (Kőrösmező).
He emphasized: the KMKSZ “remains a functioning, grassroots democratic organization.” The KMKSZ Charity Foundation played an extremely important role in providing social support to Hungarians in Transcarpathia, for example, in financing the care of sick people in need of assistance or in operating the legal aid service.
Brenzovics highlighted the crucial role of education in ensuring that Hungarians in Transcarpathia remain in their homeland:
Not a single Hungarian class or school had to be closed; our kindergartens are operating, and the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education has become a university.”
The 36th General Assembly elected him as president of the KMKSZ without any opposing candidates, and this will be his fifth term at the helm of the organization. In his closing remarks, the organization’s re-elected leader stated that the KMKSZ stands in solidarity with all citizens of Ukraine regarding the war and seeks to maintain good relations with the Ukrainian government and local administrations and councils.
In keeping with tradition, the Hungarian Cultural Association of Transcarpathian intends to maintain good relations with all Hungarian parliamentary parties and the Hungarian government in the future,”
he said.
“The most important desire and wish of the Hungarians of Transcarpathia is the establishment of peace as soon as possible; may God bless and protect the Hungarians of Transcarpathia,” Brenzovics concluded.
