The Government of Dominica is reaffirming its commitment to improving the welfare of older citizens, with Minister of State in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services, Dr. Cassandra Williams, highlighting a number of measures aimed at strengthening support for the elderly. Dr. Williams made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing the media at the launch of the Dominica Council on Ageing’s 2026 Month of the Elderly observances.
She said the administration’s social-protection efforts include the Yes We Care Programme, Public Assistance, the 65-and-over Non-Contributory Pension, the Centenarian Programme, as well as assistance for organizations and institutions that provide care to senior citizens. These initiatives were identified in the Government’s 2023/24 budget as programmes that would remain part of its support system for vulnerable groups.
Among the initiatives, the Yes We Care Programme has played an important role in providing assistance to elderly and vulnerable persons within their homes. Services have included help with personal hygiene, food preparation, household chores and other daily needs, while also providing companionship to persons who may otherwise face isolation.
Government records from an earlier period indicate that 161 seniors were receiving assistance through the programme, while approximately $1 million had previously been allocated annually to support its operations. Another major component of the social-safety net is the Non-Contributory Pension for persons aged 65 and over, following the reduction of the qualifying age from 70 to 65.
Dr. Williams is urging citizens not to view government assistance as the sole responsibility for caring for the elderly, but to play an active role in supporting older relatives, friends and neighbours. She is encouraging Dominicans at home and overseas to make time for seniors, assist where necessary and recognise the experience and contributions of older citizens to the country’s development. Her appeal forms part of this year’s Month of the Elderly activities, being held under the theme “Empowering Elder Voices for an Inclusive Future.”
