China wants a stable and prosperous Montenegro, Chinese Prime Minister Li Jiang said during a meeting with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, as part of, as he announced, “the first bilateral meeting at the highest level in the last eighteen years.”

This was announced today by the Government of Montenegro.

The announcement states that Li Jiang informed Spajić and that China has approved around 13 million euros in grants to Montenegro, which will be implemented in a manner agreed upon by the two countries.

The government said that Spajić is in China, where he is participating in the annual meeting of the new champions of the World Economic Forum. Summer Davos held in the Chinese city of Dalian.

“In the light of marking 20 years of diplomatic relations between Montenegro and China, the Prime Minister of Montenegro met today in Dalian with Chinese Prime Minister Li Jiang, with whom he discussed bilateral relations, which, as assessed, have the potential to be significantly improved in areas of mutual interest. Along these lines, the interlocutors assessed that the relations between Montenegro and China are at a high level, and that the visit of the Prime Minister of Montenegro represents ‘fresh momentum in bilateral relations’,” he writes in announcement of the Government.

Li Jiang said that Montenegro is a good partner and friend of China.

“China will wholeheartedly support a stable and prosperous Montenegro,” Li said.

The Government’s statement states that it has been assessed that successfully implemented infrastructure projects are the best confirmation of quality cooperation between the two countries.

“Space for improving cooperation also exists in the domain of more intensive economic exchange, tourism, science and innovation. During the meeting, models of future cooperation with an emphasis on green transition and sustainable energy were also discussed, especially in the context of global circumstances and the limited availability of fossil fuels,” said the Government.

The announcement also states that the Chinese Prime Minister also referred to the environmental reconstruction project of the Pljevlja Thermal Power Plant.

“We want to support the green transition, and the project realized in your hometown speaks best in support of this intention of ours,” said Li Qiang.

The Government said that mutual willingness was expressed to intensify communication and cooperation in the mentioned areas in the coming period, in the direction of defining specific projects in the interest of both countries.

“During the conversation, Prime Minister Spajić informed the Chinese Prime Minister of Montenegro’s activities in the process of European integration, stressing that membership in the European Union until 2028 is the most important goal of the 44th Government. He emphasized that Montenegro is intensifying reform processes and harmonizing legislation with the legal acquis of the European Union in order to complete the negotiation process by the end of the year,” said the Government.

The announcement also states that Li Jiang “welcomed the efforts of the Government of Montenegro in terms of realizing foreign policy goals and economic progress and said that Montenegro, regardless of its size, represents a very important partner with which the People’s Republic of China wants more intensive cooperation”.

The interlocutors also referred to the reconstruction project of the Tara bridge.

Along these lines, the Prime Minister of China emphasized that the realization of the project represents a strong symbol of friendship between the two countries.

“We want that after the reconstruction, the bridge will stand proudly above Tara in its full glory and testify to the friendship of our countries and peoples,” said Li Jiang.

Spajić sent an invitation to the Prime Minister of China to pay an official visit to Montenegro when the opportunity arises.

“The meeting in the state residence in Dalian was attended by the Minister of Maritime Affairs and the head of the Ministry of Transport, Filip Radulović, and the Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Dialogue, Naida Nišić,” the Government’s announcement states.
