LEADER OFTHE OPPOSITION Ralph Gonsalves, has intensified his call that Italian billionaire Andrea Pignataro, is not the right fit for Canouan’s development, and that the government should buy back the extensive leasehold interest in North Canouan held by Pignataro’s ION Investment Group. On Wednesday August 19, 2026, speaking on his twice weekly radio talk show ‘Morning with the Comrade’, Gonsalves cited a persistent lack of tangible development and recent international financial reports indicating liquidity pressures within Pignataro’s global Fintech empire.
According to the Opposition Leader, the breaking point came in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, which devastated much of the Grenadines on Monday July 1, 2024.
“During the period of Beryl, I became 100 percent sure that Pignataro was not the right fit for the north of Canouan, or indeed any part of Canouan,” he stated.
