Berlin (Germany), May 1, 2026 (SPS) – German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the United Nations-led political process in Western Sahara, expressing Germany’s full support for the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating and conducting negotiations aimed at reaching a just, final, and mutually acceptable political solution between the two parties to the conflict, the Polisario Front and Morocco, that guarantees the right to self-determination for the people of Western Sahara.
During his visit to the Moroccan capital, Rabat, the German official stated that his country is ready to contribute to facilitating consultations between the two parties within the framework of the United Nations and to support the efforts of the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy. He reiterated that Germany’s position, both diplomatically and economically, will remain aligned with international law.
Two days earlier, the spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry, Kathrin Deschauer, confirmed in press statements that the negotiation process under UN auspices is essential, as it remains the only way to reach a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.
In response to a journalist’s question regarding UN recommendations calling for a referendum to resolve the Western Sahara issue and the German government’s position on this approach based on popular consultation, the spokesperson stated that her government’s stance is based on the conviction that the final status of Western Sahara has not yet been determined and that a negotiation process is ongoing under the auspices of the United Nations.
