Fox Corporation announced his arrival in Costa Rica. The global giant confirmed what was a secret: it acquired the channels Tigo Sports from Central Americaso it enters the Costa Rican television market.
In fact, the corporation has already negotiated directly with a First Division team and signed it until 2030: the San Carlos Sports Association. In addition, it has contracts that it acquires through Tigo with Puntarenas FC and Sporting.
From April 2025, as The Nation had reported, the first signs of the international chain’s interest in entering the Central American market were given, with Costa Rica as one of the countries to take into account.
However, the official confirmation comes 15 days before Fox takes over, which, according to the official statement, will occur in the month of May.
To begin with, and as Tigo Sports journalists such as Kristian Mora and Tomás Fonseca announced today, the content produced in Costa Rica will continue to work and what will be done is add sporting events such as the English Premier League, the Bundesliga and the Saudi Arabian league, where stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo play.
“Starting in May, Fox arrives in Costa Rica, Fox arrives in Central America. Starting in May, the operation is acquired by Fox, where all this local soccer content from each country is maintained and where, in addition, it is enriched with the international portfolio, with the Premier League, the Bundesliga, everything about mixed martial arts, motors and more. We are pleased to announce this news. We are happy,” Mora said on Tigo Sports Radio.
An issue that generates a lot of expectation is whether Fox will bet on fighting for television rights beyond those it will already control due to the link that teams had with Tigo, such as Puntarenas FC, Sporting and the renewal with San Carlos.

Currently, most Costa Rican soccer can be seen on FUTV, as that channel manages the rights to Alajuelense, Saprissa, Herediano, Cartaginés, Guadalupe FC, Liberia and Pérez Zeledón.
Given this, The Nation He already reported since last March that Fox had had informal meetings with Alajuelense and Herediano, in addition to being interested in knowing the status of the rights of the rest of the First Division teams, except Saprissa, as well as championships such as the Liga de Ascenso and the Women’s Soccer League.
From the announcement made this April 13, it is striking that the player chosen to announce the arrival in Costa Rica was Marcel Hernández, Herediano’s leading forward. The Cuban appears in the image sent to the media, although only his face can be seen and it is not clear which uniform he is wearing.
The Team has a contract with FUTV and the public discourse that its leadership has managed is that there is comfort with the current company that owns its rights.
On the other hand, another issue that has raised many questions is what will happen to the 2026 World Cup, since Tigo had announced that the 104 matches of the tournament would appear on its screens. This will not have any major change.
Kristian Mora clarified that “with a change of logo or name, the 104 games will still go through here.
“With Tigo, national soccer and the teams grew. I want to tell you that with this we are going another step up. There is a drive to be better; I hope that on the other side they know how to manage and do good things with this,” Mora added.
Fox will make its pay television channel available to the Central American market, as well as the Tubi platform (which can now be downloaded), and announced that the Fox+ channel and the Fox One streaming service will come into operation in the near future.
“Central America is a region with a deep passion for sports and we are excited to strengthen our presence by offering a top-level sports service that combines local content and talent with our existing international rights,” said Carlos Martínez, general director of Fox Latin America, in the press release that shocked the soccer environment this Monday.
