“We may have lost this battle, but certainly not the fight…” Those were the words of Political leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) Dr. Thomson Fontaine.
His comments came following the Roseau North’s By-election where UWP Candidate Daniel Lugay received 998 votes, Dominica Labour Party (DLP) Candidate Ashma McDougall received 1,473, while Independent Candidate Sherman Boston secured 49 votes.
“On behalf of the United Workers’ Party, I wish to thank the Roseau North constituents for their support of our candidate, Danny Lugay at the by-election of 7 September 2026,” he said. “ We deeply appreciate the continued support for our party, even as we press forward with bringing meaningful change to our beautiful country.”
Dr. Fontaine also thanked all of the constituents of Roseau North “who graciously welcomed us into their homes and otherwise engaged us during the campaign.”
“ In addition, we express our gratitude to the many volunteers and others within the party who worked on the campaign in canvassing the constituency, providing financial and moral support, and showing up at the polling stations to work in less than favorable conditions,” he stated.
While it is true that the party, “did not prevail at this time”, Dr. Fontained noted that it acknowledges and deeply regret the large number of persons who were turned away from voting, the difficulty in identifying places to vote.”
He said the UWP will continue its relentless push for electoral reform and “free and fair” elections in Dominica.
Dr. Fontaine encourages everyone to get confirmed before October 15.
“Now is a good time as ever to ensure that everyone gets confirmed before the October 15 deadline and prepare for the next general election,” he encouraged.
He added, “We may have lost this battle, but certainly not the fight, as we continue to strengthen our party and secure the support of our citizens across this country.”
Dr. Fontaine believes there is much work to be done, “and we are equal to the task of restoring hope to our people and ensuring that together we build a future that we deserve.”
