The justice ministry has reversed a plan to store election data on Amazon cloud servers.
The Ministry of Justice says a new electoral information system will be hosted in a data centre in Finland. Following a competitive bidding process, the Canadian IT firm CGI was selected to supply the centre.
The ministry said the move is driven by the need to keep elections secure and running reliably.
The ministry also noted that in March, it reversed an earlier decision to move the elections’ technical system to the US-owned Amazon cloud service.
The reversal mirrors similar steps across Europe to reduce reliance on US technology.
Finland, meanwhile, is not moving to electronic voting. Ballots will still be cast on paper in the upcoming election.
