The Municipality of Montevideo (IM) will launch from this Monday, May 4 a waste control and inspection operation that foresees fines of up to 350 resettable units (UR) for those who fail to comply with current regulations. The measure will begin in municipalities B and C and will be progressively extended to the rest of the department.
The plan aims to sanction behaviors such as leaving household waste out of the containersdeposit waste from businesses and institutions in inappropriate places and the abandonment of bulky objects such as furniture, pruning remains or debris in public spaces.
As reported by the commune, the sanctions are provided for in different articles of the Departmental Digest and in the Departmental Punitive Regime, and are part of the 2026-2027 Cleaning and Waste Management Plan approved in December 2025.

In addition to the sanctioning component, the operation will include greater inspection presence in the territoryinstallation of video surveillance cameras in critical points and a vehicle equipped with cameras that will report images in real time to the Municipality’s control system.
A door-to-door information campaign will also be deployed aimed at households and non-home generators, with emphasis on behaviors subject to sanctions and alternatives for the correct disposal of waste.
The deployment will continue on a weekly basis by municipalities —CH and A, then G and D, and finally E and F— and, according to the Municipality, the actions will be maintained permanently as part of a strategy that combines information, education and inspection.
