FIFA World Cup 2026: Not goal difference, this rule will decide a team’s place if the points are equal in the group stage

New York: Day 10 is the biggest football world cup ever (FIFA World Cup 2026). The group stage is already in full swing. All the teams are giving their all to reach the knock out. So far in the World Cup round of 32, Germany, France, argentinaA total of six teams have secured their place so far. Four teams like Türkiye and Haiti have already been eliminated from the tournament. That means there are still a total of 38 teams in the fight for the 26 places in the knock out phase. However, if the points are tied in the group stage, how will a team’s place be determined?

From the group stage of this year’s World Cup, the top two teams from a total of 12 groups and the eight teams that finish in the best third place will reach the knock out stage. However, many times it is seen that more than one team has scored the same points. In this case, how will a team’s place be determined in such a situation? In recent years all other World Cups have been based on goal difference, as is the case with football leagues such as the Premier League. But this time FIFA has changed that rule. This time no more goal difference, tie breaker will be under different rules.

    Tiebreaker Rules:-

    First step-

    • In this year’s World Cup, head-to-head has been prioritized as a tiebreaker rather than goal difference. That is, if two teams finish with equal points, then those who win the match of those two teams will reach the next round.
    • If a head-to-head match is drawn, then the goal difference of that match will take priority.
    • However, in head-to-head matches, the top scorer in the group stage will finish first if the two teams cannot be separated.

    Second step-

    • If no difference can be made even after measuring the three criteria of the first stage, then the decision will be made considering which team has the higher goal difference in the entire group stage.
    • Even if the two teams cannot be separated, the team that scores more goals in the group stage will qualify for the Round of 32.
    • If all else remains equal, then the more disciplined team will finish first. That is, the better behavior of the two teams, the team that has seen less red cards, yellow cards, will reach the next round.

    Third step-

If the two teams cannot be separated in these six criteria, then the team that will be ahead according to the latest FIFA ranking, will reach the next round.
