SIBU (April 23): Federal leaders and dignitaries gathered in Sibu today to pay their last respects to the late Datuk Lau Cheng Kiong and to convey condolences to his family, including Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat Alice Lau Kiong Yieng.
Among those present were Transport Minister Anthony Loke; Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Chang Lih Kang; Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong; and Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching Xing Weiping.
Speaking to reporters, Loke acknowledged the close bond between Alice Lau and her father, describing his passing as a profound loss to the family.
“I understand that when she first received the news, she was almost devastated. This is a very heavy loss,” he said.
He said his visit was on behalf of the party leadership to express condolences and solidarity, adding that he hoped the family would remain strong during this difficult time.
Meanwhile, Chang, Liew and Xing were also seen extending their condolences and support to the bereaved family, reflecting the wide respect held for the late Lau across both government and diplomatic circles.
The presence of leaders from various ministries, as well as the diplomatic corps, underscored the significance of the occasion and the deep sense of loss shared by many.
